  • When the power is restored in your home, do not start your major appliance all at once. It is best to turn them on gradually in order to reduce potential damage.
  • If there are any power lines around your home that look damaged, report them immediately. If there are any on the ground, do not go near them. Call the local police and fire department or the utility service in your area.
  • Avoid using a generator indoors, which includes: basements, crawl spaces and garages. Even in rooms with ventilation, the exhaust fumes produced from generators contain carbon monoxide which is deadly. They should be kept at least ten feet away from your home.
  • Do not use electrical or gas appliances that have been wet or were submerged due to flooding. If any appliances in your home look damaged, avoid turning them on until they can be serviced by a professional.
  • Do not use charcoal to cook indoors, as this also produces high levels of carbon monoxide and is deadly when trapped in enclosed spaces.
  • Only drink water that has been sealed and has no sign of contamination from floodwater. Any food that is wet should not be consumed either.
  • If there is floodwater around your home, stay away from it. Floodwater is contaminated and will contain dangerous debris.
  • Make sure you take photos of the inside and outside of your home to record damages. You will need this for your insurance claim.
  • If you are cleaning your home on your own, wear protective gear on your body, hands, feet and eyes.
