The smell of grease in a kitchen sink drain is one of the first indicators of a problem. Over time, oils and fats can accumulate in your drain even if you have never thrown grease down the drain. With a little assistance Rooter Man, you can get rid of the stench and slow-draining sink.

What Causes a Grease Build-Up in Drains?

Anything from the food to plumbing problems might be the reason for a slow-draining kitchen sink. How can you determine whether your drain is clogged with grease when there are so many potential reasons? Food waste and other physical obstructions can usually be removed using a plunger or by emptying the trap under the sink.

What Happens if You Pour Grease Down a Sink?

If you cook a lot of meat or dairy items, these drains tend to have more grease blockages. A slow accumulation of fats and oils in your sink might clog your drain, especially if you adore bacon. If you see any of these signs, you may have grease buildup in your drain:

  • A bubbling or gurgling sound made as water drains
  • Gradual leakage that worsens over several days or weeks
  • Strong odor next to the sink that doesn’t go away

How To Get Rid of Grease in a Kitchen Drain

Water and Vinegar

Grease in a drain can be removed by using white vinegar and boiling hot water. Pour a 1:1 mixture of boiling water and white vinegar down the blocked sink while wearing oven mitts. Keep an eye on the drainage rate to see if it increases. To get rid of every bit of oil lodged in the drain, you might have to do this several times. Add extra water to the sink once it drains properly to wash away any leftover residue or vinegar.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Try this if vinegar and water don’t work. First, pour ½ cup baking soda and then ½ cup vinegar down the drain. If at all feasible, cover the drain with your kitchen sink stopper. This will enable the gasses created by the combination to accumulate and aid in clearing the clog. After waiting for at least an hour, flush the drain with 5-8 cups of hot water. To thoroughly clean the drain, you might need to do this two or three times.
