Planning your next vacation can be exciting and stressful. You put a lot of time into finding the right place to stay, what activities you will do when you get there, and what you need to bring to fully enjoy your getaway. You may even have to plan on where your pets will be staying while you are gone. Making sure your house is ready is also a priority. Turning off electronics and turning down your AC may be on your to do list already, but your plumbing may not be. Plumbing can be an easy thing to forget about unless something happens.

We have made a list of how to prepare the plumbing in your home before you leave for vacation. This checklist can go a long way in preventing coming back to a plumbing disaster. You can fully enjoy your vacation knowing you did everything you could in your home.

Check the Appliances

Inspect each appliance in your home, like your fridge, dishwasher and water heater. Look for any leaks, puddles of water, or obvious corrosion. The best time to do this is a week or so before you are going to leave. This gives you enough time to have one of the plumbers from Rooter Man come over for a quick inspection and complete any work that needs to be done.

Drain Cleaning

Cleaning out the drains in your sinks is always a good idea. This prevents coming back to a very smelly home since you will not have used your sinks and toilets for a while. You should also clean your garbage disposal. Pour a cup of baking soda and vinegar down the drains and let it sit for 15 minutes, then turn on your hot water and flush it out. For your garbage disposal, you can clean it using a long brush and warm soapy water. Give it a scrub and then turn on the water to let any dislodged debris go down. Steer clear of putting lemons down the drain. They may smell good but they are not good for your plumbing or garbage disposal.

Shut Off the Water

Flooding in your home can happen. You don’t want it to happen while you are gone. One of the best ways to prevent a flood while you are away is to turn off your water supply. You can do this at your main water supply if that is an option. If not, go around and turn them off at each appliance.

The best way to come back to a clean home is to take these precautions. If you want a full inspection before you leave town, call the experts at Rooter Man. With our plumbing services, you can rest assured that your home will be just the way you left it or better.
