According to the EPA, the average American family uses approximately 300 gallons of water each day. It is also estimated that nearly one trillion gallons of water are wasted yearly due to leaks within our waterlines.

Some of this waste may stem from the fact that many people ignore their waterlines. It either works, or it doesn’t. That is until we notice an increase in our monthly water bill. Many homeowners may start trying to pass it off as the regular rate increases from the city.

However, the problem could be lurking in your pipes. If you have noticed an increase in your water bill, you should check our list of five potential causes of a high water bill.

1. Leaks

Did you know that faucets alone can waste more than 29 gallons of water per day? If you have a faucet in your home or even more than one, your water bill can go up because of it. Other appliances that may leak and cause wasted water include:

  • Dishwashers
  • Washing Machines
  • Toilets
  • Hot Water Heaters
  • Refrigerator Water/Ice Lines

If you notice a spike in your water bill, you should check these places first. Not only is there a risk to your water bill, but there could also be a risk for extreme damage to your home.

2. Broken Water Lines

A broken water line can leave puddles that are under your home and out of view. If you cannot see a reason inside your home for your increased water bill, it may be time to look under your home. When you go under, look for signs of wetness, drips, or other signs of water.

3. Water Softener System Malfunctions

If you have a water softener system installed and hear it cutting in and out more often than usual, it could be due to a leak. The sounds of water running, or a pump running, is also a good indication, even if you don’t have a softener installed in your home.

4. Service Line Leaks

When looking for leaks around your home, you shouldn’t forget to check the area between your water meter and your home. Though it is generally accepted that the water company will maintain and cover the cost of water wasted up to that point; you are responsible for keeping a watch over the water lines that go toward your home. This also means you must be willing and able to repair those lines.

5. Increased Usage

If all else fails to come up with a reason for your increased water bill, you should look toward the situation around your home. Some reasons for a high water bill aside from problems or issues include the following:

  • Filling Up a Swimming Pool
  • House Guests Taking Showers
  • Kids Home for Summer Break
  • Irrigation of Your Lawn

You Don’t Have to Deal with Water Bill Increases Alone

Sometimes it can be virtually impossible to track down where the problem lies with your water lines. Most homes have water lines that go in all directions, and even a small leak that isn’t noticeable to you can be a potential cause of a high water bill.

Many factors and variables can contribute to a higher than normal water bill, and while knowing the most common causes is excellent for any homeowner, you may want to call the professionals if you have reviewed this list and still have questions.
