Did you know the garbage disposal took 11 years to develop.  It was invented in 1927 by John W. Hammes his invention went on the market in 1940 and is known as the InSinkErator.  Today more than 50% of homes in the United States have a garbage disposals, but is used less often in other countries.

The garbage disposal unit is usually an electric powered device which shreds food into small enough pieces to pass through the plumbing.  It is installed under the kitchen sink between the drain and the trap.  Some models connect to the dishwasher to dispose of this food as well.  Most units will last anywhere between 10 to 15 years and will not require much maintenance.  Generally they become jammed and can be reset by the owner.  If you run cold water before, during and after each use your garbage disposal should remain trouble free.

A garbage disposal is not a very easy do it yourself project.  You will be working with electricity and plumbing.  It is in your best interest to call a licensed professional plumber to install a garbage disposal.  Rooter Man can have one installed within a few hours call 504-262-8222.
